Wisst ihr, was ein Quokka ist? Bis vor kurzem wusste ich das noch nicht, aber oben auf dem Bild seht ihr einen. Muss ich mehr sagen? Na gut, es ist ein Kurzschwanzkänguru. Links daneben ist Jonathan Macpherson, Autor des Kinderbuches Rotto! Kylie und die Quokkas von Rottnest Island.
Ich hatte das überaus große Vergnügen, dieses spannende Abenteuer übersetzen zu dürfen und möchte euch das Buch gern vorstellen.
Kylie ist acht Jahre alt und macht mit ihrer Klasse einen Ausflug nach Rottnest Island, einer Insel vor der Westküste Australiens. Der fiese Danny, der es immer auf Kylie abgesehen hat, bringt verbotenerweise eine streunende Katze mit, die er in seinem Rucksack versteckt hat. Während die Kinder am Strand im Wasser planschen, lässt Danny die Katze frei. Als sie sich auf einen Quokka stürzen will, stellt Kylie sich dazwischen und rettet dem Quokka das Leben.
Als er sich allerdings bei ihr dafür bedankt, ist Kylie mehr als überrascht. Voller Neugier fragt sie den Quokka aus und erfährt nicht nur viel über sein Leben, sondern gerät auch mitten in einen Strudel von Abenteuern, denn die streunende Katze hat sich die kleine Schwester des Quokkas geschnappt. Gemeinsam machen sie sich auf den Weg, sie zu befreien.
Reich gefüllt mit den unterschiedlichen Tieren, die auf Rottnest Island beheimatet sind, nimmt diese Geschichte den Leser mit auf eine spannende Reise an der Seite eines der freundlichsten und süßesten Tiere der Welt. Kylie trotzt allen Gefahren und macht dabei einige wichtige Erfahrungen, die ihr Selbstvertrauen stärken.

Do you know what a quokka is? Up until a short while ago I had no idea. You can see one in the picture above. On the left of it is Jonathan Macpherson, the author of this delightful children’s book.
I had the great pleasure of translating this adventurous tale and would like to introduce it to you.
Kylie is eight years old and goes on a field trip with her class. They visit Rottnest Island, situated off the Australian Westcoast. Mean Danny, who always picks on Kylie, brings a stray cat in his backpack and sets it loose on the island, while the children are playing on the beach. When the cat attacks a quokka, Kylie comes to his rescue and saves his life. She is more than surprised when the quokka thanks her for it! Curiously she asks him all sorts of questions and not only learns a lot about quokka life, she is also pulled into a whirlwind of adventures, when the cat captures the quokka’s baby sister. Together they set out to free her.
This tale is filled to the brim with a variety of animals living on Rottnest Island and takes the reader on an exciting trip at the side of one of the cutest and friendliest animals on earth. Kylie not only masters numerous dangers, she also finds new confidence as a result of her many adventures.
