Wenn man sich in der Welt so umschaut, kann einem jegliche Besinnung flöten gehen. Ich will das Leid gar nicht auflisten, das täglich durch die Nachrichten geistert, ihr wisst es selbst. Man hat den Eindruck, dass alles nur noch finster, aussichtslos, hoffnungslos ist. Wie kann man da Weihnachten feiern?
Wenn nicht jetzt, wann dann? Denn Weihnachten ist genau das, was wir jetzt brauchen.
Gott stellt sich persönlich mit seinem Licht der Finsternis entgegen und die gute Nachricht ist: Die Finsternis hat es seither nicht auslöschen können. Von Beginn an hat man versucht, das Licht von Jesus Christus auszulöschen, aber es leuchtet immer noch. Überall auf der Welt werden Christen wegen ihres Glaubens verfolgt, unterdrückt und getötet, aber es nützt nichts. Das Leben, das wir in Jesus finden können, lässt sich nicht töten. Es ist ewiges Leben – ein Licht, dass sich immer weiter und weiter ausbreitet, von Herz zu Herz.
Das ist Weihnachten.
Das dürfen wir feiern, trotz Krieg, trotz Inflation, trotz Klimakatastrophe. Überall da, wo Menschen der Finsternis trotzen, ist Weihnachten – vielleicht leiser, aber bestimmt nicht schwächer.

When you look at the world, it’s hard to find the Christmas spirit. I don’t even want to list all the suffering going through the news each day, you know it. One gets the impression that everything is dark, hopeless, without perspective. How can you celebrate Christmas?
If not now, when? Because Christmas is exactly what we need right now.
God himself opposes darkness with His light and the good news is: The darkness was never able to extinguish it. Right from the start people tried to extinguish the light of Jesus Christ, but it’s still shining. All over the world Christians are being persecuted for their faith, subdued, killed. It’s no use. This life we find in Jesus cannot be killed. It is eternal life – a light spreading further and further, from one heart to another.
That’s Christmas.
We may celebrate that, despite war, despite inflation, despite climate catastrophe. In all the places where people defy darkness, Christmas reigns – perhaps quieter, but certainly not any weaker.
And that is why I wish you all a defiant Christmas!
In him (Jesus) was the life and this life was the light for all men. It shone in the darkness, and the darkness could not overcome it. John 1, 4-5
